Thursday's tape looked like a tech wreck. It was not. The index fell on a handful of megacaps; four out of five S&P 500 members rose. What changed is the price of admission to the AI trade: cloud growth is now table stakes, and the market is grading the cash-generating core underneath it.
The AI trade has not broken; its underwriting standard has tightened. Through 2025 the market priced the size of the bet. Through earnings season 2026 it is pricing who can afford it — and that shifts leadership toward balance sheets with funding engines that are still compounding, toward physical suppliers with contracted offtake, and toward the broad market whose earnings never depended on the bet at all.
