Two Premiums Under Review | Apple, Palantir & What the Multiple Already Knew
Apple and Palantir both beat consensus in the September quarter, and both stocks traded lower afterwards. The reasons are close to mirror images. Apple's premium is a safety premium, paid for capital-light reliability during the AI capex cycle, and its guidance has just shown that safety now carries rising costs: margin compression, slowing services, and growth bought through price. Palantir's premium is an acceleration premium, and the company delivered acceleration once again, yet at roughly 81x forward earnings even a beat-and-raise only meets expectations.
Our read is that the valuation, not the print, is the binding constraint for both. The more durable question is which premium is easier to defend from here.
